Traveling with Special Needs Kids

I am prayerful that our days with the GFCF diet are coming to an end. The last 2 years travelling with food restrictions has been challenging.

Really my kids do best at home. But they were ok travelling to my childhood home. When my father died last year and the house sold, our trips to visit family became a lot more complicated.

Hotels are a nightmare for many reasons. My extended family and friends have offered their homes to help us when we travel. First my aunt offered to let us use her condo for few days over Christmas. She went and stayed with her sister, so we didn’t have to worry about our kid’s nighttime behavior.

Recently we stayed at another aunt’s home. The kids were really familiar with that home and settled right in. Staying with family is great for the distractions, help and fully equipped kitchens you need when travelling GFCF!

This week I am staying with a family friend from childhood. She has a beautiful clean and Ahem WHITE condo. I hope we leave it that way!

As a child my sister and I would stay at her home, or she would watch us at ours when our parents were out of town. New Year’s Eve was always rung in with both our families together. She was my second mom growing up.

It has been such a blessing sending the week here. The kids think they are in California because these condos are the same light yellow stucco.  The kids are having a blast feeding the fish in the pond, taking walks and swimming in the community pool.

Staying out of town is not easy with special diets and special needs kids. One hotel chain is trying to make a difference. Wyndham Hotel in Austin Texas has 5 hotel rooms specially designed for autistic children. The hotels com equipped with door alarms, child proof drawers and outlets and a GFCF restaurant menu.
